Agafay desert guide: How to visit from Marrakech

The Agafay Desert is the nearest desert landscape to Marrakech: bare stony hills and dry plains on a high plateau just outside the city, with the High Atlas mountains as a backdrop. It is not the Sahara of postcards, and knowing that before you go is what makes the trip worth it.

In short

Agafay is a stony desert, not a sand desert: there are no dunes. It lies just outside Marrakech, so you can visit in a single outing. A typical visit combines a one-hour camel ride, quad biking on rocky tracks and the sunset, with an optional dinner or a night in a tent.

What the Agafay Desert is (and isn’t)

Agafay is a rocky desert. Its landscape is made of rounded stony hills, arid plains and open plateau, with the Atlas range in the background. You will not find sand dunes here.

That is less unusual than it sounds. Only around 20% of the world’s desert surface is sand; most deserts are stony plains and plateaus shaped by wind. Agafay belongs to that majority. What it offers is space, silence and wide views a short distance from the medina, which makes the Agafay Desert, Morocco’s most accessible desert landscape from Marrakech, a good fit for a short stay.

Where Agafay is and how to get there from Marrakech

Agafay sits just outside the city, so a visit to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech does not require a night away.

The usual way to go from Marrakech to the Agafay Desert is an organised outing with pick-up at your accommodation. On our trips a minibus collects you from hotels and riads in the central area of Marrakech. The road itself is part of the experience: palm groves and village houses thin out, the land turns dry and rocky, and the Atlas mountains appear on the skyline.

Things to do in Agafay

Agafay is about a few simple activities done in a big landscape. These are the ones we organise there, and how each one actually works.

Camel ride

At the camp, a local guide gives a short briefing, you put on a traditional outfit provided for the ride, and you meet your camel. The ride lasts one hour and follows tracks across a plateau with open views over Agafay.

Quad biking

After the camel ride comes the quad. An instructor explains the basics before you start, then you ride over the stony ground of the desert. The terrain is uneven rather than sandy, so the pleasure is in the open space and the views, not in climbing dunes.

Sunset and desert camps

Our Agafay outing is timed to end with the sunset, the best light of the day for photos over the hills. If you want to stay longer, a dinner can be arranged under a Berber tent, with traditional music around a campfire and a starry sky far from the city lights. It has to be booked before you leave Marrakech. A night in a tent at Agafay is also possible on request.

All of this, from the camel ride to the sunset, is how our Agafay Desert trip with camel ride and quad from Marrakech is organised.

Hot-air balloon nearby

A common question is whether you can fly over Agafay in a balloon. The flights we use do not take off there: they launch north of the Marrakech palm grove, in the Jbilet area, on the other side of the city. From the air you see the landscapes around Marrakech and, in the distance, the Atlas.

Pick-up is between 5:00 and 5:30 depending on the weather, the shared flight lasts 50 minutes to an hour, and a Berber breakfast follows under a large tent, with a flight certificate. You are back in Marrakech around 10:00. Shared flights carry up to 32 passengers, the flight is not suitable for wheelchair users and is not recommended during pregnancy. Details are on the hot-air balloon flight over Marrakech page.

Best time to visit: season and time of day

For comfortable conditions, visit Agafay between October and May, and go in the late afternoon for the sunset. Agafay lies just outside Marrakech, so the city’s climate records are the closest reference available.

Data: Marrakech Menara Airport, 1991 to 2020, via Wikipedia. Figures rounded; top value is the average high, bottom value the average low.

From June to September, average highs in Marrakech run from 32.5 °C to 37.7 °C, with July and August the hottest months. In summer, the end of the day is the most sensible time to be out in the open desert. From October to May, highs stay below 30 °C and the whole afternoon is pleasant.

The other side of the year matters too. In December and January, average lows in Marrakech drop to about 7 °C and 6 °C. If you stay for dinner after sunset in winter, the evening will feel cold, so bring a warm layer.

Half day, full day or overnight?

A single outing that ends at sunset is the simplest way to see Agafay. Here is how such a visit unfolds, with the optional evening at the end.

  1. Pick-upMinibus from your accommodation in central Marrakech
  2. On the roadPalm groves give way to stony hills, with the Atlas in the distance
  3. At the campShort briefing by a local guide and traditional outfit for the ride
  4. Camel rideOne hour across the plateau
  5. QuadBasics from the instructor, then a ride over rocky ground
  6. SunsetPhotos over the hills as the light drops, then the drive back
  7. Optional eveningDinner under a Berber tent with music by the fireBook it before leaving Marrakech.

Make it a full day. Agafay fits well after a morning activity. A balloon flight ends around 10:00, which leaves the rest of the day free before an Agafay sunset. The Essaouira day trip can also finish with an Agafay dinner on the way back, as an option.

Stay the night. A night in a tent at Agafay can be added on request. It is the easiest way to see the desert sky after dark and the hills at sunrise without a long drive.

Agafay vs. the Sahara

Choose Agafay if you have one free day in Marrakech and want desert scenery without a long road trip. Choose the Sahara if what you really want is sand dunes: a big dune field such as Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, needs at least three days there and back.

The two are not competitors so much as different trips. Agafay is the desert you can fit into a city break. Erg Chebbi is a journey of its own, through the Atlas and the valleys of the south, with the dunes as the destination.
