About this tour

Oukaïmeden is the ski resort of the High Atlas, about 75 km (47 miles) from Marrakech, and for birders it is one of the most reliable places anywhere for African Crimson-winged Finch, a chunky pink-washed mountain finch of the Atlas ranges. On the meadows left by the snow you also find Red-billed and Alpine Choughs, Rock Sparrows, the Atlas form of Horned Lark and, in spring, Seebohm’s Wheatear.

The drive up is part of the day. The mountain road climbs through valleys of orchards, walnut trees and scrub where Moussier’s Redstart perches in the open, Levaillant’s Woodpecker calls from the trees and Maghreb Magpies cross the road. A small reservoir just before the village is worth a quick check. On the plateau we walk slowly, with time to watch, listen and photograph.

This is a private outing with a licensed nature guide who sets the pace around what you want: target species, photography or simply a good mountain day with special birds. Between December and March snow can cover the plateau or close the road, and the guide checks conditions before you leave.

Good to know

Snow in winter

Between December and March snow can cover the plateau or close the road. The guide checks conditions before departure and, if needed, suggests a route through the lower valleys instead.

Birds are never guaranteed

Crimson-winged Finch is the most reliable species on the plateau, but it is a wild bird: some days a flock feeds at your feet, other days it takes a long search.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for birding at Oukaïmeden?

Spring, from March to June, gives the widest choice: Seebohm's Wheatears are back and birds are singing. Crimson-winged Finch is there all year, but in midwinter snow can block access to the plateau.

Am I sure to see Crimson-winged Finch?

It is the most reliable species on the plateau, but no wild bird can be guaranteed. Some days large flocks feed close by; on others it takes a longer search.

Do I need to be fit?

No. You walk at birding pace on tracks and meadows. The plateau sits at about 2,600 m, so if you feel the altitude, we simply stop more often.

Is it suitable for photographers?

Yes. The guide spends longer where the light is best and approaches slowly, without disturbing the birds.

Can I combine it with a desert tour?

Yes. Oukaïmeden is day one of our 7-day Atlas and Sahara birding tour, and this day trip can also be booked on its own.
